Salmon Holes Albany, Western Australia – Photo & Canvas Prints for sale
Salmon Holes is a beautiful cove in the Torndirrup National Park in Albany, Western Australia.
It is a location that can be pretty wild when the swells and wind from the southern ocean are high, but it does offer quite a bit of protection from the weather due to the nearby reefs and the cove-like structure of the bay. The calmer waters of Salmon Holes are known to attract salmon schools in season and is, therefore, a popular fishing location.
In wintertime, the whole area can be shrouded in sea mist making a magnificent scene at sunrise for the early riser.
Whales with calves can sometimes be seen resting in the deeper water inside the cove. This is usually seen in winter time and best observed from the elevated viewing platforms near the carpark. The beach can be accessed via some well-constructed but quite steep staircases. It is a bit of a climb down to the beach but worth it for a walk along the relatively small beach to enjoy a closer look at this beautiful location.
In the right weather, Salmon Holes can be a great place for swimming and snorkeling and there are usually some waves in the cove to liven things up a bit. Care needs to be taken as these places can often be quite dangerous if the swells are high. Rock fishing is only permitted by those with the appropriate safety equipment and training.
Salmon Holes is a wild place that offers plenty of opportunity to experience the wonders of the natural world, in a location that is very close to the city of Albany.
