Canvas Print Information

We use fine art grade canvas for all our canvas printing. This, combined with the outstanding print permanence ratings of Canon’s professional inks gives assurance that our prints will stand the test of time.

We spray our canvas prints with 3 coats of a UV Blocking laminate which further extends the life of the print. The laminate we use has been especially formulated for fine art print making. It provides scratch resistance, seals the printed surface of the canvas and provides a cleanable surface.

Canvas should always have a protective laminate over the printed surface before stretching. Any canvas purchased from us comes prepared and protected in this way.

Unstretched Canvas Prints

Unstretched canvas prints are supplied laminated and ready for stretching. The print you receive will be a bit larger than the image size ordered. The extra is required to wrap around the sides and back of the internal frame when it is stretched (refer Stretched Canvas – Mirror Wrap info below).

The viewable image from the front, after it has been stretched, will be the same as the image size that was ordered.

Canvas prints are then rolled and placed into a strong tube for post or pick-up.

Stretched Canvas (Mirror Wrap)

Stretched canvas is when the canvas is stretched over an internal frame. It is a completed ready-to-hang product. The canvas is tensioned and stapled to the back of the frame. Because the edges of a stretched canvas frame are quite thick, a portion of the image is mirrored at the front edges and “wrapped” around the sides giving the edges continuity with the main image on the front. No image is lost when the image is mirrored and wrapped around the sides. The viewable image from the front, after it has been stretched, will be the same as the image size that was ordered. The photo below shows this clearer than it can be described in words.

Stretched canvas is one of the best ways of producing large images. They are very light for their size making handling very easy and they don’t have any of the reflection issues associated with glass.

High quality canvas prints, properly laminated, can have a 3 dimensional look about them. Standing in front of a large stretched canvas can feel like you are looking through a window to the scene itself.

Shadow Frame – Optional Extra

A Shadow Frame is an additional frame that fits around the stretched canvas.
It is an optional extra that provides a very distinctive trim around the image. Shadow Frames are available in a wide variety of modern and classic finishes. See below for some current examples
